The Golden Age of Campers

“The people who live in a golden age usually go around complaining how yellow everything looks” – Randall Jarrell

As a history teacher, I always get a little bummed out when someone says that the “golden age” of anything was at a time long before I was born.  However, it is true that the golden age of campers was during the 1940s and 1950s.  If you see the campers during the 1970s and 1980s (like the one above), they are hideous boxy contraptions.  Their very aesthetics make one want to set fire to their dark wood paneling & shag carpet just to put them out of their misery.

Life Magazine has recently published a series of photos showing vintage campers.  Most of them are tiny trailers but some have hints of the teardrop shape.

So, if you’re like me and didn’t get to live through the golden age of campers, you can still see this piece of history with unique and one-of-a-kind photography.

Enjoy the show!
